Newport Heights Elementary Chess Club

About
The Newport Heights Chess Club was founded in 2003 as a place where the school's students could gather, play and improve their skills at chess. Local chess coach and Jazz musician William "Al" Walker was brought in to provide expert instruction. Interest in the club was strong and during the second year, club enrollment had grown enough to support a second coach. High-tech entrepreneur turned chess coach Stephen Ryan was recruited to fill that need. Shortly after, Al left due to scheduling conflicts and was replaced by five-time WA State chess champion Neil Salmon. The club has continued to grow in size and strength, and in March, 2011 the NHCC team won it's first ever team trophy - 4th place at the TOPS Chess tournament in Seattle, WA.
